  • The experimental satellite Telstar 1 was launched, inspiring the 1962 instrumental by the Tornados.
  • Animation was used for some memorable title sequences for films of the period, such of those of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World (1963) with its basic globe design subjected to a relentless series of changes, lasting over four minutes.
  • The 1962 film Doctor No, which started the James Bond movie franchise, begins with a simple white dot traversing the screen.
