- The Eurovision Song contest has taken place annually since 1956. It was inspired by the Sanremo Music Festival, Italy, which was first held between 29th and 31st January, 1951.
- Eurovision was originally, mostly a radio show, although there were cameras filming, for the few people, at the time, who had television sets.
- Switzerland hosted the first competition, as well as being awarded the winner's prize.
